Low Power Industrial IoT Gateway

This versatile embedded single board computer hits on all the main points for a low power, cost effective, Internet-of-Things (IoT) capable, and ready-to-deploy OEM board with an emphasis on data integrity.

The TS-7180 offers the ability to communicate seamlessly with several different networks simultaneously from a single device. Using the onboard peripherals the system can connect to Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, USB, RS-232, RS-485, and CAN networks or devices. Built-in module interfaces like the MultiTech and XBee/NimbeLink sockets and internal USB ports (coming soon) allow expansion to other networks like Cellular, DigiMesh, ZigBee, Lora, and other proprietary or industry specific networks. This ability to communicate over a wide variety of wired and wireless interfaces puts the TS-7180 in an excellent position to be an IoT node or gateway.

Available with the TS-7180-SRW9I is a GPS module which enables applications to track global position of the TS-7180. Perfect for asset tracking.

A Nine-Axis Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) motion tracking device containing a gyroscope, accelerometer, and compass is an on-board option for asset management, fleet management, and other applications which would require sensing motion or vibration in the environment.

Applications with strict low power requirements will appreciate the work that's been done to reduce power consumption to less than 1 W in typical conditions and a 22 mW sleep mode. Power over Ethernet (PoE) is supported via a daughter card, if desired.

Robust and Rugged Engineering

Each component on the TS-7180 has been carefully chosen to ensure not only reliable operation in the field but also to get maximum product lifespan for 10+ years. The fanless design of the TS-7180 paired with the low cost enclosure is able to withstand high vibration, high debris, and a wide temperature range of -40 °C to 85 °C.

RELIABLE DATA STORAGE WITH TS-SILO AND FRAM

The TS-SILO power reserve ensures that there will never be data loss or corruption when there is unexpected interruptions in power. TS-SILO provides another 30 seconds of operation to allow graceful system shutdown, protecting data stored on the on board eMMC or a microSD card. The onboard MLC eMMC flash is configurable as pseudo SLC (pSLC) memory for further reliability. Additionally the TS-7180 integrates Ferroelectric RAM (FRAM or FeRAM ) which combines non-volatile data storage with incredibly high read/write endurance for the ultimate in reliability for heavy data logging applications.

Short Time to Market with Long Term Deployment

Everything is preloaded to get your application up and running quickly. Debian Linux OS, utilities, and tools are preloaded to help you get the most out of the hardware features. The guaranteed 10+ year lifecycle ensures a long-term deployment in the field, free from expensive redesigns that commonly accompany "low-cost" competitor products with no guaranteed long-term availability.

The TS-7180 single board computer features:

  • NXP i.MX6UL SOC with a 696 MHz Arm® Cortex®-A7 core
  • 512 MB DDR3 RAM (1 GB DDR3 RAM Option Available)
  • 4 GB MLC eMMC Flash, configurable as pSLC for added reliability

Industry standard connectors, such as USB host and device ports, Ethernet, and serial ports are included. In addition, rugged screw terminals and a user programmable button are also included. Additional storage is possible through the microSD socket. A battery-backed real time clock (BBRTC) keeps accurate time for the system and a watchdog timer is there to help when a system becomes unresponsive in the field.

Applications with strict low power requirements will appreciate the work that's been done to reduce power consumption to less than 1 watts in typical conditions and 22 mW sleep mode. Also, applications which are prone to unexpected power outages or frequent power cycling can rely on the optional TS-SILO to provide up to 30 seconds of power reserve in order to run shutdown scripts and gracefully halt the system in order to prevent filesystem and disk corruption.

Software

By default, command line Debian Buster is loaded which provides a massive repository of prebuilt applications and services and Debian provides a long history of focus on stability and support.

Software features include:

  • U-Boot bootloader
  • Linux Kernel
  • Debian Buster distribution support
  • Many programming languages supported (C, C++, Python, node.js, etc.)
  • Source code examples available
  • Buildroot

Buildroot is a simple, efficient and easy-to-use tool to generate embedded Linux systems through cross-compilation. To assist customers heading down this path we have forked a stable snapshot of Buildroot and have added on top of it everything that is required for operation with one of our products. For more information, see the Buildroot Configuration section in the manual.
